Have you ever felt triggered out of nowhere? Found yourself stuck in the same emotional pattern or relationship dynamic—no matter how much “work” you’ve done? You’re not broken. You’re not going backwards. You’re likely brushing up against something much deeper: your shadow self.
In this post, I want to share what shadow work really is, why it’s so important for your spiritual journey, and how you can begin this healing process with love and compassion. This blog expands on what I shared in my latest podcast episode, “Shadow Work 101 – How to Heal What You’ve Been Avoiding,” now available on all streaming platforms. If you’re ready to heal at a soul level—this is your invitation.
🌑 What Is Shadow Work?
The “shadow” refers to the parts of yourself that you’ve unconsciously rejected, suppressed, or disowned. These are often traits or feelings you were told were “too much,” “not enough,” or “unsafe to express” as a child or in past relationships.
The shadow can include:
-Anger
-Envy or jealousy
-Fear of abandonment
-Control issues
-Shame, guilt, or unworthiness
-People-pleasing or hyper-independence
Shadow work is the conscious process of bringing these parts into the light—not to get rid of them, but to integrate them. To meet them with love. To understand their origins. To free yourself from their unconscious grip.
🔮 Why Shadow Work Is a Spiritual Practice
In spiritual growth, we often focus on light, love, and positivity—but true wholeness requires us to also embrace what we’ve pushed away.
That’s where the deepest transformation happens. When you avoid your shadow, it controls you unconsciously. When you face your shadow, it becomes your power source.
Shadow work helps you:
-End self-sabotaging patterns
-Break free from toxic relationship cycles
-Reclaim your voice, boundaries, and desires
-Deepen your intuition and energetic clarity
-Heal emotional triggers at their root
🕯️ How to Start Doing Shadow Work (Gently)
This isn’t about diving headfirst into trauma. It’s about soft, honest awareness. Here are some ways to begin shadow work:
1. Notice Your Triggers
Start paying attention to moments when you feel “too emotional” or reactive. Ask yourself:
“What part of me is being activated right now?”
“When did I first feel this way?”
Often, your reaction has more to do with an old wound than the present moment.
2. Use Shadow Work Journal Prompts
Writing helps you safely explore what’s hiding beneath the surface. Try:
“The part of me I never show others is…”
“I judge others when they…”
“What I was taught to believe about being lovable is…”
“I feel ashamed when I…”
3. Practice Inner Child Connection
Imagine your younger self—the age you felt most unseen. What does she need from you now? How can you be the loving adult she didn’t have?
4. Say This Affirmation Often:
“It’s safe to feel. I welcome every part of me with love.”
✨ Shadow Work Isn’t About Perfection—It’s About Wholeness
The more you integrate your shadow, the less power your past holds over your future. You’ll feel less reactive, more grounded, more intuitive, and more you.
I believe that shadow work is sacred—and when done with compassion, it becomes a portal to your soul’s deepest truth.
